Marshall Freeman, Jr. - Career Exploration Coach

Marshall is an involved and understanding professional who works hard to improve the lives of young people and provide them opportunities to have a successful future. Marshall is currently the Assistant Building Manager at Marquette University Law School as well as the Student Event Coordinator/Front Desk Assistant at the Marquette University Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

As a child, what did you dream of becoming when you grew up?
As a child, I dreamed of becoming an astronaut.

If you could ask the President any question, what would it be?
I would ask the President, “What advice would you give to a young male aspiring to achieve in life?”

What is something that you didn’t do that you wish you did?
I wish I had studied abroad and got a chance to live in another country.

Timothy McHatten - Career Exploration Coach

Timothy is a motivated team member who excels in strong communication skills and leadership abilities. Previously, Timothy was a Program Generalist at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee where he assisted with youth activities by supervising youth on field trips and outdoor events. Timothy is pursuing his Associates degree at Milwaukee Area Technical College.

What's your most embarrassing childhood memory?
My most embarrassing childhood memory was when I was in first grade and the fastest kid in my class challenged me to a race. I did not wear a belt that day, and as soon as one of my classmates said go my pants fell down and everyone saw my underwear.

As a child, what did you dream of becoming when you grew up?
As a child, I dreamed of becoming a famous musician.

What fictional character do you wish you could meet?
I wish I could meet Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story.

LaJoy Mitchell - Career Exploration Coach

Lajoy is an experienced Human Resources Professional with experience in recruitment, retention and diversity initiatives. Her passion is building relationships between candidates and employers. LaJoy works as Program Delivery Lead Core for the Center of Recruiting Excellence – Manpower Group. LaJoy also has a history of working as a youth development professional through pre-college programs at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.

What are two things people wouldn’t know by looking at you?
Two things that people wouldn’t know by looking at me are: (1) I picked up the awesome ability to tap dance and (2) I love to sing.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am most proud of achieving my Graduate degree and Professional Human Resources Certification. Being a first generation graduate was an accomplishment of honor.

What fictional character do you wish you could meet?
I would love to meet Doc McStuffins and thank him for inspiring young ladies to become intelligent and compassionate doctors.

Amy Paulick - Career Exploration Coach

Amy is a driven and enthused team member who has a strong passion for working with youth. She is currently an intern with Lead2Change, Inc. as she earns her Master’s Degree in Social Work with a concentration in Mental and Behavioral Health from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

What is something that you didn’t do that you wish you had?
I wish that I would have studied abroad in college. I think that it would have been a great learning and cultural experience for me.

As a child, what did you dream of becoming when you grew up?
As a child, I dreamed of being a secretary. I remember I loved to play secretary with my cousins.

If you could ask the President one question, what would it be?
I would ask the President, “Why are helping professionals looked down upon and underpaid when those are the people working to create a better world and be a rock for people who need someone to lean on?”

Nikotris Perkins - Instructor

Nikotris is a Black woman who connects people to their passion and assists them in seeing the power in their presence, voice, and most importantly their freedom. Nikotris is a Youth Advocate that fights to get youth voice at every table where decisions are made, as she believes the power of youth is the foundation of most movements. Nikotris is a Educator who believes that literacy is bigger than reading books for school. She is a proponent of community based education that forces reading and writing to the forefront where everyone who uses a language is comfortable with it in all its forms, spaces, and uses. A proud Milwaukeean, Nikotris was formally educated at both Alverno College and Marquette University in Community Leadership and Development, Curriculum, and Non Profit Management. She is currently a doctoral candidate at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

What are 2 things people wouldn’t know by looking at you?
Looking at the stars in a clear sky without city lights is one of my favorite things. I'm am fiercely loyal, sometimes to a fault.

As a child, what did you dream of becoming when you grew up?
A teacher.

Do you ever talk to yourself? When and what do you say?
Yes, daily I work through an issue, build on an idea, or remind myself of my potential.

Katelyn Phillips - Career Exploration Coach

Katelyn is committed and devoted to working with youth in order to ensure that each young person is given the tools and opportunities to have a successful future. She is currently an intern with Lead2Change, Inc. as she works hard to earn her Master’s Degree in Social Work with a concentration in Children and Families from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

As a child, what did you dream of becoming when you grew up?
As a child, I dreamed of being a writer. I would participate in workshops and contests that explored creative writing and storytelling. By the time I entered high school, I was leaning more towards journalism as a career path.

What are two things people wouldn’t know by looking at you?
I don’t necessarily know what people assume of me when they first meet me. However, I would guess that they don’t know (1) that I was a college athlete; I played club ultimate frisbee at Marquette University. I would also guess that they don’t know (2) that I am the type of person that would jump out of an airplane; I totally am, and I totally did.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my acceptance into graduate school. It took long enough, but I’ve finally realized what it is that I’d like to do for the rest of my life – working as a school social worker – and pursuing my Master’s degree will help me to achieve my goal.

Chandar Robertson - Lead Career Exploration Coach/Instructor

Chandar is a patient and caring professional committed to helping students learn and achieve their goals. Chandar worked as a College Access Advisor at the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation where he developed and delivered high impact presentations to low-income and first generation students and assisted them with planning, preparing, and paying for post-secondary education.

What are two things people wouldn’t know by looking at you?
Two things that people wouldn’t know by looking at me are: (1) I love to play video games and (2) at my core I am an introvert.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am most proud of graduating from Marquette University after overcoming life’s roadblocks and challenges.

If you could ask the President one question, what would it be?
I would ask the President, “What mechanism or plan are you going to put in place to help students/people deal with the growing issue of student loan debt while encouraging young people to see the value in a post-secondary education?

Talva Rogers - Instructor

Talva is a skilled and energetic professional who has a strong passion for working with young people. Talva previously worked as the Director of Computer Support & Instruction for Sherman Oaks Parents Association in Sherman Oaks, California.

What fictional character do you wish you could meet?
I wish I could meet Yoda.

If you could pick a new name for yourself, what name would you pick and why?
I would choose my new name to be Brad Johnson.

What is something that you didn’t do that you wish you had?
I wish I would have visited Las Vegas.

Jamie Weston - Career Exploration Coach

Jamie is an intelligent and kind team member dedicated to having a positive influence on the city of Milwaukee. She is currently an intern at Lead2Change, Inc. as she works towards completing her Bachelor Degree in Social Work from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

As a child, what did you dream of becoming when you grew up?
As a child, I dreamed of becoming an elementary school teacher.

What fictional character do you wish you could meet?
I wish I could meet Hermione Granger from Harry Potter.

What is something that you didn’t do that you wish you had?
I wish I would have traveled abroad during my undergraduate at UWM.
